Transitions and changes

Personal growth involves the ability to manage the transitions and changes that leave a person in stress, anxiety, and a difficult-to-define “emptiness”. Transitions affect us all, up to 10-20 times in our lifetime after major life-events. Coping with change has been a fundamental survival issue for millennia. So human beings have evolved a remarkable mechanism for adapting to trauma and changes. Small changes can be overcome by learning. Larger changes may challenge our identity and involve letting go of deeply held hopes or beliefs.

Change is an event in our external world that happens to us. Transition is the psychological process that happens within us in response to the change. The way we manage the transition is even more important than the specific change. To be successful in both the change implementation and in helping people we need to understand and manage both the external elements of the change implementation as well as the internal requirements needed to make a personal transition.

Promoting individual and organisational well-being through “Healthy Workplace” Project

Investing in the physical and mental health and wellbeing of your workforce creates a healthy workplace and is simply good business.

A healthy workplace is one where making the healthy choice is the easy choice. It works with its team to ensure all aspects of its operations aren't harmful. It helps its people be as healthy and strong as they can be.

A healthy workplace knows healthy businesses need healthy communities. It recognises that helping keep families and communities strong benefits its own business through a healthier workforce and a more invested, loyal community.

Individual lifestyle factors

People’s health and wellbeing is shaped by a number of social, economic and environmental factors, including individual lifestyle factors. They are what people bring to work from their homes and communities, such as how they eat and drink, health conditions, personal stresses, family issues, what they think and value. To create a healthy workplace, a healthy lifestyle should be encouraged, which means the workplace does what it can to make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Workplaces should invest in becoming healthy because it's:

  • the right thing to do –a successful business looks after its people and community
  • the smart thing to do –employees prefer a positive workplace culture where they can be happy, safe and productive, and so are less likely to leave (and more likely to join)
  • the legal thing to do –employers respect the legislation when provides  a healthy and safe workplace.
